For more information about Clubs and Societies email the ANU Students' Association studassc@student.anu.edu.au

If your club or society is affiliated with the ANU Student's Association or the ANU Sports Union, SDS will provide your club with the ability to distribute information via the World Wide Web and a mailing list.

SDS will provide:

  • web publishing space on clubs.anu.edu.au
  • an email mailing list in your clubs name

What do you have to do to request web publishing space and/or a mailing list?

You must visit the Infoplace Consultants and request that web publishing space and/or a mailing list to be set up.

You must take with you a letter from either the Students Association or the Sports Union, stating that your group is affiliated with them, and that you are the person reponsible for web publishing and/or email lists.

The infoplace Consultant is located on the third floor of the Chifley Library

You must nominate a club member who is willing to take responsibilty for the published information. This can be either the President, Secretary or another nominated member of the Club.

In all cases, the consultant will log a job with SDS to get the club's web publishing space setup.

Each club is allocated 50 Megabytes of disk space and the URL of your clubs website will be http://clubs.anu.edu.au/clubs/Club_Name.

For example: http://clubs.anu.edu.au/clubs/Example

What do you have to do to remove your clubs web publishing space and/or a mailing list?

You must take with you a letter from either the Students Association or the Sports Union, stating that your group is affiliated with them, and that you are the person reponsible for web publishing and/or email lists.

The infoplace consultants will then arrange to have your web publishing or email lists removed.

How to maintain your Mailing List?

Once your Email list has been setup, you will be contacted and informed what the list email address is, and what the name of the file is containing the members of your list.

This file must be a plain text file list of email addresses, one per line of the people who are to receive mailings to the list.

You should keep your list on a floppy disk, and update it in any way you see fit, then you can use ftp to connect to student, to place the contents of your list in the file mentioned above.

How to set up your website?

Once your web pubishing space has been setup you will need to create your website.

Access to your clubs web publishing area will be via FTP only. The name of the server is clubs.anu.edu.au. You will not be able to telnet to clubs.anu.edu.au. The username and password for your web publishing account is the same as your email username and password.

The files for you group can be found in /usr/local/web_pages/Clubs/Club Name, there is also pointer to this location from your home directory, named either public_html, or named after your groups page pages.

The HTML file that is the main or home page of your website should be named index.html and should be in the directory in your account named after your club.

Where the club webmaster intends to deploy a site with dynamic content, the clubs.anu.edu.au webserver offers the following additional functionality: the PHP server-side scripting language, and a back-end MySQL database that bears the same name as the club. Please note: Due to the fact that assignment of access rights to the MySQL back-end is *not* automatic, webmasters should lodge database access requests with the Infoplace Consultants.

How to add a description and an image to the ANU Student Clubs and Societies index page.

The list of ANU Student Clubs and Societies has some customised information about each club. Some of the clubs listed have a description and a small image associated with their entry. You can create these for your clubs entry, if you follow the following instructions:

  • A description of your group can be created by putting a file called index.description at the top level of your clubs web directory. This should be a plain text file and the maximum length of the description is 250 characters.
  • An Image (or Icon), for your group can be created by putting an image in the top level of your clubs web directory, called either:
index.gif if the image is in gif format, or
index.jpeg or index.jpg if the image is in JPEG format

The image is restricted to 100 pixels wide, and 50 pixels high. If your image is large than 100x50, then it will be resized to 100x50 pixels.

SDS does not have the resources to help you with writing HTML, PHP, or SQL queries
