29th May 2005 - ANU Spirit (7) v Woden (0)

11.14am, Sunday, 29 May 2005, Kaleen playing fields - site of a great victory 4 weeks ago, and hopefully soon to be venue for another display of keen soccer skills by the ANU Spirit.

With their goalie AWOL, Woden fielded only 10 players for the start of the match. On the other hand, the 11 players that took the field for the Spirit knew once we'd killed ourselves trying to prove to Chris fitness training is simply no longer necessary, we had talent champing at the bit on the side line.

Despite the odds in our favour (or perhaps because of them) the first quarter of the game wasn't our best. However, structure (and Chris' yelling) finally won out, resulting in a couple of beautiful goals from Riss and another from Cara. Having found our form and the back of the net, the Spirit dominated all over the field.

With Woden struggling to clear the ball from their half, the Spirit took the opportunity to control the game. The midfield was particularly strong, with Linda, Jackie, Cara, and Donna passing around the defence and setting up numerous opportunities. Amelia, Ingrid and Serena made good use of plenty of space on the wings, feeding balls into our strikers and attacking midfielders, who (as you'd expect) kept the Woden goalie very busy. Riss, in particular, was on target all day, finishing with 4 (FOUR) goals to her name (obviously a hat-trick just wasn't enough!).

Watching Cassie (1 goal), Cara (2 goals) and Riss's success, at this stage our defence started to get twitchy. Liv, Meaghan and Kim each took turns edging up on corners and Meaghan came close to scoring when a rebound found her just up from the top of the box. Goalie Emma touched the ball once (or maybe twice), but having worn herself out scoring for the Pirates earlier, I don't think she minded too much.

Final score: ANU Spirit 7 - Woden 0. And here's hoping our good form stays with us for two tough matches coming up.

22nd May 2005 - ANU Spirit (1) v Black Ewes (1)

So somehow, in a moment when I expect I wasn’t listening, sugar mouth Steph managed to talk me into writing this match report. (“a long one cause you guys don’t have any!! “) Damn your cunning tactics Steph, so here goes.

On yet another sunny Sunday mornin’, we of the Spirit made our monthly pilgrimage to that delightful outer suburb of Cooma, Calwell, to do battle with the much skilled and feared Black Ewes. Though already fully psyched for a tough game after Chris’ inspirational Friday email, our collective motivation levels became even more elevated upon arrival by the sight of Steph, arms flailing, running at us screaming, “I scored a goal! I scored a goal! It’s the first goal I’ve ever scored!!!”.

Suitably impressed, we went into our duel with the sheep so psyched we should have carried health warnings. Unfortunately something got lost in the translation, and after what felt like about 15secs, but was probably closer to 5-10 min, (due in part to a Steiner school education I am unable to estimate time, distance, or size, sorry guys!) the black ewes promptly scored us on. Clearly our motivation was the slow release kind!

However, after some back and forth running, defending and….stuff, of indeterminable time, (see above disclaimer) the Spirit finally awoke and in a stunning display of fluke, yours truly managed to punt the ball past the keeper, levelling the scores at one apiece. Lifted by this sudden change of Spirit (sorry I couldn’t help myself!) The Spirit (!) rallied and so fully started to dominate, having at least three or four more pseudo attempts on goal, before we were all put out of our misery and half time was called.

The second half kinda seemed a lot like the first but without the goals. We ran a lot, chased a lot, strung several passes together, had shots on goal, took some corners and generally held our breath in silent prayer every time the sheep got near our goal. Though thanks to the hardwomen of our backline, the sheep’s inability to shoot on target, and our Uber goalie Emma laying some smackdown, the sheep failed to score again.

At the other end of the park we were all trying very hard to score another goal, even Chris was putting in the hard yards, stalking the sideline repeating the mantra of “not another draw”, and yelling tres motivational things at us like “chase the ball” and “look interested”, but alas we couldn’t find the net and the game ended one all, sorry Chris. Clearly it goes without saying that we will kick their asses next time we meet!
