Who's Dodgy and Who Rocks ? boycotting and alternatives
Most multinational companies are huge conglomerates that own many popular brands. Many have links with the arms trade, are prosecuted often for environmental destruction, exploit their workers, support oppressive and brutal regimes, and ignore land-rights claims around the world. These companies work hard at censoring critics, as the McLibel case demonstrates, and also profit from irresponsible marketing. Through consumer power, any individual can boycott, but sustained campaigns are needed to make a strong impact. For more information, contact Students Campaigning Against Multinationals (SCAM) through http://www.asen.org.au. The real lesson is that if it is produced by a multinational, it's probably dodgy and should be avoided. If in doubt, check the label.
If you can never remember the companies to avoid when you're out there in aisle-land, try downloading and printing the boycott quick-reference card that you can fold up and carry with you. If you've had a look through the boycott section and decided not to support a particular company, then this'll help you stick to it!
