Boycotting and Alternatives

Mineral- and oil- extraction companies

Many church groups hold shares in Western Mining Corporation, which operates the Olympic Dam uranium mine in South Australia (Roxby Downs). Other shareholders include the Royal Blind Society of NSW; the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia; the Australian Academy of Science; the RSPCA (VIC) Foundation; the University of Melbourne; the Australian Red Cross; and the Asthma Foundation.

British Petroleum (BP), Exon/Esso, Shell, Mobil and Texaco are all companies to be boycotted due to their human rights and environmental records. Shell also played a part in the executions of ten Nigerians who were protesting over its operations; there is now the "No Oil From Nigerian Blood" campaign. Caltex sells Boral Gas (produced by Boral, which clearfells native forest and has a dodgy track record), so it should be avoided.
