Genetic-engineering companies
US Chemical company Monsanto genetically engineers soy, canola, rice, wheat, and other crops and engineers and clones animals for transplants and stock. This intensifies modern agricultural problems such as high toxicity, low biodiversity, low pest and disease resistance, and greater corporate control of farmers and consumers. Monsanto produces Roundup, NutraSweet, Equal, and Aspartame, and owns pharmaceutical company GD Searle. Contact the Australian GeneEthics Network on (03) 94162222 or 340 Gore St Fitzroy VIC 3065, or see the Friends of the Earth web page at http://www.foe.org.au
For genetically unmodified soy products, buy So Natural, Natureís Soy, Vitalife, Aussie Soy Milk, and Simply Better brands. Also, avoid products that have soy protein isolate in them, as it is often another name for genetically engineered soy beans.
Other products that contain
genetically modified ingredients include: Dove Caramel Chocolate bars;
Mars Bars; Maltesers; M & Ms; Snickers bars; Sanitarium Country Spiced
Soy Burger and Sanitarium Soy Healthy Spiced Soy Fillets; Kikkoman Teriyaki
Marinade and Kikkoman Soy Sauce; Heinz Chicken Dinner; Heinz Banana Custard;
and Homai Cocktail Spring Rolls. Other products produced by these companies
may not contain genetically engineered foods. Many companies do not know
whether some of their products contain genetically engineered ingredients
(how reassuring!), including Arnottís, Birdís Eye, Uncle Tobyís, Pampas,
and Vogelís Soy and Linseed Bread. Some companies are refusing to say whether
their products are genetically engineered including Nutella, and Kraft
(which produces vegemite).
