Green Living: On Campus

ANU’s Community Neighbours - The ROCKS

Down in one corner of ANU campus is a collection of funky organisations, the Residents of Childers and Kingsley Streets (ROCKS). Some have a particular environmental focus, such as the ANU Food Co-op, the Conservation Council, the Environment Centre Library & Shop, Permaculture ACT, and LETS (Local /// what does E stand for?/// Area Trading System). There are also Photo Access, a cooperative photo studio; and the Canberra Dance Theatre. People at the Environment Centre can point you to lots of other groups operating in the Canberra region, and they’re well worth checking out.

ANU Food Co-op on Kingsley St has bulk food, organic vegies, chocolate, spices, and other bits and pieces. Open 10am—3:45pm, Tues—Fri; 10am—3pm, Sat; phone 6257 1186.

Bogong Environment Shop has books, clothes, posters, bulk detergents, and random other stuff. Unfortunately it’ll be closed for refurbishment in the first part of 2000; otherwise it’s open 9am—5pm, Mon—Fri; 10am—1pm Sat; phone 6247 3064.

If you’re researching environmental issues, the Environment Centre Library has info on all sorts of issues as well as how-to books. It’s in the same building as the Bogong Environment shop, and is also being refurbished in early 2000.

QBC LETS (Queanbeyan—Canberra Local Energy Trading System) is a goods- and services- exchange system complementary to the formal economy but hoping to avoid its greed and scarcity through using QBs instead of dollars. Good for people on low incomes with some time. Phone 6247 2882; open 11am—1pm, Tues, Thurs and Sat.

Permaculture ACT (PACT) is a group of people interested in and practising permaculture. People work on gardens individually or together in suburbs and regional areas, at Quamby and at the ROCKS area, according to the ethics of care for the earth, care for people, and cycling of surpluses. Meet 1st Tues/month 7:30pm at the PACT office in the ROCKS area. Contact Rosemary at home on 6247 3612.
