Green Living: Around Canberra

Making Stuff Go Round – Second—hand goods

You can make things go a long way by re-using them before they even get to be recycled. Second—hand products you can buy or sell include clothes, music, books, furniture, cooking oil (this is mostly done on a commercial scale, for example from resteraunts), concrete, metals, refrigerants, and other products. Look under "Recycled clothing" and "Recycling services" in the yellow pages. As well as second—hand stores, try some of these: less-than-$100 classifieds in Tuesday’s Canberra Times; "swap shop" (exchange one item for another) listings in the Chronicle; garage sales on weekends.

Revolve in Belconnen and Mugga Lane salvage all sorts of things that people are throwing away and sells them. Open seven days a week, 8am—4:45pm; phone Mugga Lane Revolve on 6295 7014 or Belconnen Revolve on 6254 8989.

There are heaps of opp shops around Canberra, including in Civic, Dickson, Jammison, Belconnen, and Fyshwick; check the yellow pages for details. You can buy second hand books, clothing and music from stalls on the ANU campus on Thursdays, or at Gorman House markets (Ainslie Ave) on Saturdays.
