rainy day union #35

Our Objectives:

We are devoted to popularising chess on campus.
We also actively help out with the
ANU Chess Festival.

Meetings:

The ANU Chess Club meets every Friday 12 noon - 3:00pm in Union Court on the blue tables. For cold/wet weather we are inside the Refectory. The club doesn't usually meet on Fridays during uni holidays. Sets can also be borrowed from the Uni Bar whenever it is open.

All students, as well as staff, are welcome to come along and have a game.

We aim to lend a helping hand

and get more students to play in the most presitigious chess events in Australia, the ANU Chess Festival, and the Doeberl Cup.

We organise regular friendly, social competitions

Our primary objective is for people to have fun and we will be organising many novelty and social events, as well as serious tournaments like the ANU Chess Club Championship.

Membership is $1 for the calendar year - we are an ACT Chess Association affiliated club.

Upcoming Events

The ANU Chess Festival has just been completed and the ANU Chess Club is recovering somewhat! Go to the website for full results.

We will be organising some novelty events during semester 2, however the next huge local event to watch out for is the 2001 Australian Centenary Chess Festival, incorporating the 2001 Australian Open. This is an event not to be missed.

There is talk of an Australian Intervarsity Championship to coincide with the Australian University Games in Ballarat between October 01-06 2000. Contact the executive for further details.

The 2000 ANU Chess Festival was a great success.
Overall there were 600 participants in all of the events - a record attendance. Players alone totalled over 450. The event is now firmly on the calendar of top Australian events.

The events were as follows:
- National Computer Chess Championship
- Computer Chess Workshop
- ANU Primary Schools Championship
- ANU Primary Schools Championship
- ANU High Schools Championship
- University Co-op Bookshop Simultaneous Match
- ANU Open
- ACT Go Championship

The links above give details about each of the events.

In 1995 the then President of the Australian Chess Federation said that the ANU Chess Festival was the most important chess event in Australia, comprising a masters tournament, a prestigious open weekender, National Computer Chess Championship, and a simultaneous display by a champion player. However an unfortunate corollary of having so many events was that there was a shortage of organisers. Clearly if the ANU Chess Club is able to establish itself, it will be admirably placed to combat this problem in one of the ANU's biggest annual publicity events.

Reports:

2000 ANU Club Championship:

13 players took part in this year's Club Championship during March/April. Games were played at a time limit of 1 hour. The winner was Milan Grcic with a perfect 7/7.

2000 Simul Bar Challenge:

ANU Champion Vladimir Smirnov took on 20 players simultaneously in the Refectory on Friday of O-Week in late February. Participants got free drinks for every 20 moves they survived!

Doeberl Cup, Easter 2000:

There was an impressive turnout of 195 players.
International Master Aleks Wohl (Qld) took out the Open Section. Click on the link for full results.

ANU Inter-College Chess Championship 2000:

Burgmann College won the round-robin competition consisting of 6/7 of the halls and colleges. Nigel "Nasty" Tao won the event giving Burgmann the title for the second year in a row. Click on the link for the report.

Market Day during O-Week 2000:

There was a good turnout during market day. The club has over 40 members for 2000.
